New Delhi: Many Indians woke up to payment troubles on Monday as UPI-based apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm began showing glitches. People trying to send or receive money found their transactions stuck or failing midway. This unexpected outage has led to frustration among users, especially as more people now rely on UPI for everything from groceries to cab rides.
Social media was flooded with complaints and screenshots from users who said their money didn’t go through or apps just wouldn’t load. According to tracking platform Downdetector, 62 percent of users reported fund transfer issues, 21 percent had problems with the apps themselves, and 17 percent struggled to make payments. The scale of the glitch affected users across cities, and some said they couldn’t even open their apps properly.
No official reason yet, but concerns grow
So far, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) hasn’t said what caused the issue. In past cases, like in April, NPCI had blamed overloads caused by certain banks rechecking transaction statuses. But this time, there is silence.
This latest UPI failure comes at a tense time for the country. In the last week, India and Pakistan have seen a spike in military activity. In response, the Ministry of Finance has already warned financial bodies, including NPCI, to be on high alert for cyberattacks from across the border.
Whether this UPI issue is linked to a larger cybersecurity threat is unclear. For now, users are hoping services stabilise quickly. Digital payments have become a daily need, and any disruption hits more than just convenience.
